Superfood: Spinach juice recipe

spinach juice recipe juice detox retreat

Spinach is packed with many essential vitamins and minerals, so incorporating a spinach juice into your breakfast or lunch meals is a great idea! This spinach juice combines with pear, which is a really lovely combination – try it and you will soon agree!

In terms of nutrition, spinach is a good source of vitamins A, C and K as well as B-complex vitamins (especially folic acid and B6). Vitamin K is needed for blood-clotting, so do check with your doctor if you take warfarin or other blood-thinning drugs, as it could interfere with your medication. Spinach also contains good levels of the minerals iron, potassium, calcium and magnesium. It has a high water content (around 90%) and is low in calories, sugar, salt and fat.

We always recommend eating spinach with a source of vitamin C, as this helps your body to metabolise (absorb) the iron content more efficiently. Lemon juice, apples, pears all have a good amount of vitamin C (so too does carrots and peppers if you want to enjoy the full vegetable – no-fruit – option).

All this nutritional content means eating spinach has many benefits for our overall health. Indeed, some articles claim that eating spinach can help reduce oxidative stress and the effect of free radicals (which means it helps to keep your cells healthy). It is also said to benefit eye health, moderate blood pressure and even help to prevent cancer. Enjoying spinach as part of a healthy diet, combined with a healthy lifestyle, is a great idea!

Juicing tip: Buy large leaf spinach if you can, as this is better for juicing than the really small-leaf salad spinach. If you use a centrifugal juicer (rather than a masticating juicer), sometimes not a lot of spinach is produced, so we recommend sandwiching the spinach leaves in between two pieces of apple or pear. This helps to keep the spinach in one place, thereby producing more juice. (If you are unsure of the difference between a centrifugal and a masticating juicer, you might like to read our article how to choose the best juicer for you.

Spinach juice recipe – spinach-tastic

Serves: 1

Calories: 402

Large handful spinach
3 cm broccoli stem
2 pears
1 apple
2 cm lemon
1/3 avocado

Method

We recommend washing the spinach beneath cold running water to make sure there is no soil left on the leaves and stems. (You can also wash the broccoli, pears and apples too). If you have a strong juicer and are using an unwaxed lemon, leave the skin on, otherwise trim off the outer skin of the lemon, leaving the pith.

Put the pear, apple and lemon – with the spinach sandwiched in between – through your juicer.

Place the avocado into a blender and add in the fresh juice. Blend for 30 – 60 seconds until you have a delicious green smoothie juice to enjoy.

Wash your juicer and blender soon after use, to maintain them in tiptop condition.

Pure vegetable spinach juice recipe

Sometimes you just want to drink a green vegetable juice, with no fruit in it. Well, if that´s what you want, try this recipe instead:

Large handful spinach
3 cm broccoli stem
1 courgette
1 cucumber
2 cm lemon
1/3 avocado

Follow the same instructions as above. If you feel you need a little more “sweetness”, add some carrots instead (but note this will change the colour of the juice and make it somewhat brown in appearance) or a green pepper.
