As Summer heats up, you might be looking for a tasty juice to enjoy, to help maintain balance with your electrolytes.
Potassium is a mineral, found in many natural foods. It is also often called an electrolyte, together with sodium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorous and chloride. They have many functions in the body, including helping to maintain physiological balance in our body. In particular, potassium helps to maintain normal levels of fluid inside each cell that makes up our body. It works together with sodium, which helps to maintain normal fluid levels outside of the cell. Potassium is also needed for muscle and nerve health. (Please note, if you have kidney disease, you might need lower levels of potassium – the kidneys deal with potassium and if you have kidney disease, too much potassium can stay in your body causing muscle problems).
Water melon is a great source of potassium, and is a wonderful refreshing Summer fruit to enjoy, so we included it in this juice. You will also find high levels of potassium in bananas, other types of melon, avocado, cucumber, leafy greens (including beet greens), as well as beans and legumes, many nuts and wholegrain rice. Fruits and vegetables that contain higher sodium levels include carrots and celery, so we have included these in the juice too, to bring balance to the juice, as well as added flavour.
Summer potassium balance juice recipe
Large slice of watermelon
½ fresh beetroot
1 stick celery
Half an avocado
2 cm slice lemon
Wash the watermelon and cut a lovely wedge – there is no need to remove the skin (or seeds) as this can go through your juicer. Use cold running water to rinse beetroot, carrot and celery. You might want to trim some of the skin off the lemon (remove it all if you have a waxed lemon or if your juicer finds lemon skin difficult to handle). Cut the avocado in half, remove the stone and skin.
Juice the watermelon, beetroot, carrot, celery and lemon, allowing the juice to run into a large jug.
Blend in the avocado – either add the avocado into the jug and blend together using a hand-blender, or pour everything into a large blender and blitz.
Give your equipment a wash and then enjoy your juice!
Summer potassium balance smoothie recipe
To make this recipe into a smoothie instead, you will need a good blender and these ingredients:
Large slice of watermelon – remove the skin
½ fresh beetroot
1 large carrot – remove the top
½ stick celery
Half an avocado
1 tbsp lemon juice
100 ml non-dairy milk
Place all the ingredients into your smoothie maker or blender. Blend for 60 – 90 seconds, to make a smooth consistency. Pour into a glass.
Remember to wash your blender before enjoying your smoothie.
