Pear juice recipe to boost memory and mental agility

Our juice of the month is this fabulous pear juice – Memory Enhancer. As well as tasting great, pears contain high amounts of vitamin C (one medium pear is approximately 10% of your recommended daily intake of this immune-boosting vitamin). They also contain potassium, iron, magnesium, calcium and folate, and are a good source of fibre. With all these vitamins and minerals, they have great health benefits – pears are said to help with heart health, digestion and can help with weight loss. Pears and most other fruit help to enhance mental agility, including memory, due to their vitamin C content.

There are many different varieties of pears that you can purchase. When buying a pear, you will probably find they are quite hard (unripe) – this is deliberate because once a pear becomes ripe, they become soft and perishable. To check how ripe the pear is, press the top part of the pear, near the stem (rather than squeezing the main part of the pear). If it gives a little bit under pressure then it is probably just right for eating. If the pear is not ripe, then leave it in a room (rather than the fridge) for a couple of days to allow it to ripen and soften, then place in the fridge (where it should keep for a few days). If the pear is overripe (really soft and squishy) then you are better to poach it and enjoy it as a lovely dessert.

You can also enjoy this juice without adding the avocado (this means there’s one less item of equipment to wash!). This will reduce the calorie count down to 209.

Memory Enhancer: pear juice recipe

Serves: 1

1 pear
1 apple
2 carrots
Chunk ginger (more if you love ginger!)
2cm unwaxed lemon (or remove the other layer of the skin)
1/3 avocado


Wash all the ingredients (except the avocado) beneath cold running water. You can leave the skin on the ginger. Juice the pear, apple, carrots, ginger and lemon. Pour the juice into your blender, add the avocado flesh and blend for 30-60 seconds. Your juice is now ready to eat!

Remember to wash your juicer and blender before drinking your juice – this makes it easier to clean.
