Cabbage Digest - find digestive health with our cabbage juice recipe

Have you ever thought about juicing cabbage? Whilst it might not be one of the first vegetables that you reach for when making a juice, cabbage is packed with nutrition and gives off quite a lot of liquid when it is put through your juicer. This cabbage juice, Cabbage Digest, is a pure vegetable juice, so is low in fructose. You can drink it at any time of the day – if you have it for breakfast, we suggest adding in half an avocado (use your blender to combine the juice and avocado), to give you some added healthy oils.

There are many health benefits of cabbage. Cabbage is among the top five vegetables for vegetable fibre, which means that including cabbage regularly in your diet will help to support your digestive health. What might surprise you to learn is that half a cup of cabbage will deliver 150% of your recommended daily allowance of vitamin C! It is also a good source of potassium. Some authors note that the combination of vitamin C and potassium helps to reduce cholesterol and also could prevent coronary artery disease – so juice up that cabbage as it´s good for your heart! Cabbage is also said to help to reduce yeast infections and to support the good bacteria in your colon.

One of the possible downsides of eating a lot of cabbage is that it can cause gas and flatulence. This is particularly so if you do not eat cabbage regularly. It happens because the fibre from the cabbage is not properly digested in the small intestine, so instead the digestion happens in the large intestine. If you find that you experience flatulence, then introduce cabbage gradually into your diet – start with small portions of well cooked (soft) cabbage and slowly increase the portion size and regularity over time. Juicing can help to reduce these symptoms, as by juicing the cabbage it is broken down into smaller pieces, so it is more easily digested in the small intestine.

Juicing tip! Try different versions of cabbage for this recipe. Curly cabbage (like savoy) will give you a different colour juice than using white cabbage. When using curly cabbage, leave the thick inner stem in and fold the leaf over into a compact shape to put through your juicer.

Cabbage Digest: cabbage juice recipe

Serves: 1
Calories: 170


Large chunk cabbage (5cm thick slice, or 4 leaves)
2 large carrots
½ courgette
2cm lemon


Prepare your fruit and vegetables: wash them beneath cold running water to make sure all residue is washer off. If you are using a waxed lemon (or if you have a lower power juicer), then trim off the outer layer of the lemon, leaving the pith on.

Put all the ingredients through your juicer.

Wash your juicer and enjoy your cabbage juice!

Make a sweeter cabbage juice!

If you think that drinking this cabbage juice might be too strong for your taste buds, then add one apple or pear into the juice, instead of the courgette. This will make it slightly sweeter and you might find it easier to drink.
