Tips for getting back to your ideal weight
Many of our guests come to La Crisalida to help kick start a healthier lifestyle and lose weight. If you struggle with your weight on a regular basis then this could be the article you’ve been looking for. We explore a few of the factors that lead us towards excess weight and give you some tips and ideas for turning things around. We also give you food for thought about what it really takes to be successful and maintain your weight loss.
When it comes to weight gain there is a key piece that is overlooked by most people and once understood can help us to make fundamental changes to our relationship with food. Most people blame the amount of food they eat for their weight gain, when it is really the type of food they eat that is the root of the problem. Many people with weight issues are amazed at how others can be so disciplined in their eating habits. In reality what is happening is that these people are eating different more nutritious food and because they are eating different food, their bodies (and usually also their mind and emotions) are feeling different and for example more satisfied.
Many people with weight problems tell us that they eat until they feel “full” as it only then they start to feel “satisfied”. Therefore they keep on eating and often don’t have a pause or stop button. This is really because foods they chose are not only lacking in nutrition, they are packed with taste “enhancing” fats, sugars, refined foods and additives. Even when they are full, very often they are still not “satisfied”.
However, the great news is that it is possible to feel “satisfied” without eating until you are feeling “full”. For example, most people at the retreat report feeling “satisfied” (not “full”) after a glass of fresh nutritious juice. They also report that with the juices they no longer crave chocolate, biscuits, crisps and most of the time will power is not even required! The same is reported with our food, which is based upon a fresh, unrefined, plant based and whole grain diet.
In fact for any healthy eaters there is no will power needed to stop as the type of food they eat actually gives the “fully satisfied” signal to the brain when it is naturally time to stop eating.
Those who struggle with weight also normally eat quickly. If we slow down our pace of eating, and become more mindful of every bite and chew, then awareness builds about how we are feeling and what we are sensing within our body and senses moment by moment. Our experience is that when we slow down our eating and are having processed or refined, nutrient poor foods our body can sense that something is not quite right. If we can then switch to a diet full of nutrition, the impact on the senses can be almost instantaneous. As we sense it more we can enjoy the flavours and ultimately feel nutritionally satisfied too. Finally, one of the main reasons why so many diets are doomed to failure is because a person’s weight is really a reflection of their lifestyle. A temporary diet can only have temporary results. Permanent weight loss can only happen if there is a permanent lifestyle change too. This is why even though many people lose weight through juicing at the retreat we encourage guests to sample the tasty food too. Juicing on its own cannot be a sustainable way of keeping weight off, because juicing is not fully sustainable itself. However, making different choices around food types is sustainable in the long run. And once guests are amazed at the retreat how tasty and fulfilling it can be to eat with nutrition in mind there is no turning back!
